The Vision Behind ModMed® OBGYN

Hung Ecklund, MD, our medical director of obstetrics and gynecology, talks about ModMed’s approach to creating our all-in-one OBGYN software.

Hi, I’m Dr. Hung Ecklund, Medical Director of Obstetrics and Gynecology at ModMed.

I’ve been a practicing OBGYN for the past 16 years. In that time, I’ve worked with a number of different EHRs where I spent evenings documenting, and thinking, “there’s got to be a better way.”

So, when I had the opportunity to join this forward-thinking company, known as ModMed and work on software that I believed was going to change the game for my colleagues and me — I didn’t hesitate.

I couldn’t be more excited to show you the innovative solution we’ve come up with for what I believe is the hardest working medical specialty on the planet.

As you know, OBGYNs do so much more than deliver babies. We encounter a wide range of clinical scenarios and have intricate workflows to support them.

Historically, it’s been difficult to find an EHR that could truly support our day-to-day — without building many of the workflows and templates we need ourselves.

EMA has built-in specialty-specific content coded in by myself, and our OBGYN team lead, Dr. Nigel Spier.

We are both practicing physicians, which helps us understand the ever-changing dynamics in healthcare, and how they could be affecting practices like yours.

In developing ModMed OBGYN, we also consulted with OBGYNs across the country, so we could understand THEIR diverse needs and challenges.

Dr. Spier and I took that feedback and worked with the team to design the workflows that are built into our EHR, EMA. At various points within these workflows, EMA has been programmed to present the information needed to help support the physician’s medical decision-making.

Working at a company that values the physician perspective has been essential to our process. Dr. Spier and I aren’t just serving on a board or consulting with ModMed. We continue to code our medical knowledge into the solution, review designs, and listen to our clients to find more ways to support them.
