Learn how one ophthalmologist went from skeptic to believer by switching to ModMed’s all-in-one ophthalmology suite
“After getting acclimated to using EMA, I realized how much time I could save and my days ran a lot more efficiently. EMA’s new single-screen workflow eliminates the need to switch between multiple screens and applications by combining data from multiple pages to simplify visualization and documentation. This helps me document faster and spend less time navigating through the EHR.“
ERIC JENNINGS, MD
BACKGROUND
ModMed’s Medical Director of Ophthalmology, Dr. Eric Jennings, is a board-certified, fellowship-trained ophthalmologist specializing in cataract surgery, refractive surgery (LASIK), and the management of corneal and external disease at Woolfson Eye Institute. The practice has 26 providers, 12 locations and an Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC).
Dr. Jennings used several different EHR systems but quickly discovered something was different about ModMed Ophthalmology than the others. The cloud-based system actually felt like a clinical partner, enhancing patient interaction, simplifying documentation and improving work-life balance. Dr. Jennings shares his experience using the software at his practice and what it has been like to be part of the ModMed team.
IMPROVED CLINICAL WORKFLOW
Our practice used a mix of paper and a well-known server-based EHR system prior to converting to ModMed. Truthfully, I was apprehensive about switching at first and had the ‘if it’s not broke, don’t fix it’ mentality. Sometimes change can be painful, but I learned that sometimes you don’t know what you’re missing until you experience something new. After getting acclimated to using EMA, I realized how much time I could save and my days ran a lot more efficiently.
Our practice has multiple locations, and I love the iPad’s portability versus logging into a desktop each time. It also enables me to chat with the patient face-to-face while quickly tapping through the exam on the iPad versus having my back to the patient. It’s much less intrusive to document and allows me to really focus on the patient.
EMA’s new single-screen workflow eliminates the need to switch between multiple screens and applications by combining data from multiple pages to simplify visualization and documentation. This helps me document faster and spend less time navigating through the EHR.
The system is so customizable. Once I established and began using Protocols, I noticed I could close my charts when I was done with the patient. I value my family time. If I do need to take something home, whether it’s reviewing information or finishing planning, it’s nice to have a cloud-based solution so I can do it right from the comfort of my couch and not be stuck after hours at the office.
BUILT-IN SUBSPECIALTY EXPERTISE
At Woolfson Eye Institute, we provide services for glaucoma, retina and vitreous, cataracts, corneal disease, and even cosmetic treatments. EMA comes equipped with ophthalmology subspecialty content that is customizable to the individual user.
Our glaucoma specialist Jenna Yoder, DO, shared, “Using EMA has helped my workflow. There is seamless integration with imaging. With one click, I can access the patient’s entire imaging history along with dates so I know when they are due for a particular test. The ‘eye log’ option shows me in one window what the patient’s IOPs have been over time, and I can easily see the dates of procedures/surgeries.”
She said, “I love the ‘treatment regimen’ glaucoma option under plans, where I can find each glaucoma medication and quickly choose the correct dose/schedule for the patient. Prescribing drops is so much easier than with previous EMRs. My technicians also report that refilling is easy, so they are not bogged down with refill requests. The referring doctor’s information is in place with self-populating contact information, so I can quickly fax the visit note to the referring provider.”
NOT JUST AN EHR
What I like about ModMed is its focus on innovation and creating new solutions for the future. They’ve made it a point to include doctors who are actual users in the product decision-making processes. They need our input for clinical content, helpful new features, etc. I believe the physician role, in general, is diversifying, and physician leadership and input are needed more than ever. Being part of the ModMed team allows me to represent the physician user community for feature and medical content feedback. It’s exciting to be part of such a comprehensive team of professionals who care about the impact they make on their customers. It’s been humbling to be part of the team.
ModMed is not just an EHR. It’s everything surrounding the patient. It’s helping administrators track the health of the practice, it’s helping the front desk better communicate and schedule, it’s helping streamline the revenue cycle, and it’s helping communicate with patients to make sure they have the instructions and follow-ups needed. ModMed is all of the patient journey, the ecosystem built around the patient. I’m trained to diagnose and treat conditions. You have to find a partner who’s going to say, “I will help you take care of your patients.” That’s the bigger picture to look for when choosing a system, and that’s what ModMed offers.
