‒ BENJAMIN COX, DO
Dr. Benjamin Cox, owner of Cox Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Surgery located in Mount Pleasant, Mich., is a sports medicine fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon, specializing in surgical and non-surgical care of bone, joint, tendon, ligament and muscle injuries. He has trained in fellowship at the Andrews Institute for Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine where he cared for athletes from the NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB and numerous colleges and universities.
Dr. Cox spent hours after clinic completing notes with his previous EHR system and needed to get a better handle on his business operations. He evaluated different solutions and selected the all-in-one orthopedic suite from Modernizing Medicine®, which includes EMA®, the award winning* orthopedic EHR system, and modmed® BOOST, a combination of Practice Management technology and business operations services. Dr. Cox discusses the benefits his practice has experienced since implementing EMA and modmed BOOST.
GIVE OPERATIONS A BOOST
With the help of modmed BOOST, we’ve streamlined operations and gained transparency into our revenue cycle process. Even though Modernizing Medicine handles our medical billing, I still feel like I’m in control. I can easily view submitted bills with the associated comments, such as why payment may be delayed, if a patient switched insurance or the patient’s deductible amount. Having full access to information about our practice’s financial health has allowed us to quickly correct claims and prevent timely filing issues.
The Practice Management system has quite a few features that help simplify workflow in the office. We find that “tasking” is a direct and quick way to communicate with employees and oversee tasks through completion. Items on a “to-do” list could be misplaced or forgotten as there are many moving parts within an office. This helps us stay organized and on track.
I was recently at a billing course and I asked for tips on how to modernize my practice. The advice given was that whatever I did that day, I bill for that day and it’s sent to the clearinghouse. With my previous system, it would be weeks after I saw a patient before the charges went to the clearinghouse. Now, with EMA and modmed BOOST, I finalize my notes the same day and they are immediately sent out to bill. I now have less outstanding AR and fewer filing issues and my patients’ satisfaction has increased. Finalizing my documentation is now a natural part of my workflow because it’s so easy to complete and I don’t procrastinate getting it done.
THE RIGHT PEOPLE, PROCESSES AND TECHNOLOGY
modmed BOOST’s experienced billing team manages our revenue cycle from before patients are seen to after balances are paid. We have weekly calls with our client manager where she addresses billing concerns, financial trends and EDI/ERA/EFT enrollment opportunities. We are thankful that she has patiently walked us through every one, step-by-step. She continues to educate our team and we feel like she is a member of our office. She is accessible and only a phone call away.
modmed BOOST has proven that they are attentive to issues that might negatively impact our practice’s operations. I’m the team physician for a local college whose third party insurance company remits payments for injured athletes I treat after the patient’s primary medical insurance processes the claims. Our client manager began to notice this volume of AR age beyond expected time frames. She worked with the college to try to identify the issue and assigned projects to modmed BOOST’s AR teams and within about 45 days we began to see this payer timely and appropriately reimburse these claims. We went from 46% of the overall AR outstanding beyond 90 days, down to 16% in less than 2 months. Our client manager showcased an exorbitant amount of effort into getting those denied claims paid rather than considering them uncollectible and adjusting them off.
The modmed BOOST team has always gone the extra mile to help my revenue cycle and business operations run successfully. They make every effort to provide thorough and quality service, and it shows.
