Established in 1989, Cass Street Ear, Nose & Throat has been serving the community for over 30 years specializing in pediatric and adult disorders of the ear, nose, throat, neck, hearing loss and allergy/immunotherapy.
The practice used paper charts for their clinical documentation and decided it was time to implement an ENT EHR system. After careful consideration and a lengthy due diligence process, the group selected EMA®, the award-winning* ENT EHR system from Modernizing Medicine®. Having an ENT-specific EHR that was designed to adapt to otolaryngologists’ workflows and preferences has shown to be beneficial to Cass Street Ear, Nose & Throat.
Following the adoption of the ENT EHR, the practice later implemented the Practice Management (PM) system, which seamlessly connects to EMA. Practice Manager Lynn Schultz discusses the benefits of the all-in-one ENT software and how the ongoing relationship with Modernizing Medicine has kept the practice engaged and happy.
THE RIGHT ENT SOFTWARE SOLUTION
We spent a lot of time and effort deciding what EHR to go with. I watched many practices jump into other EHRs too soon, only to fail and have to do it twice. We wanted to get it right the first time, so we waited for the right solution to come along, which was EMA. EMA was designed specifically for ENT and is affordable, so it was a no-brainer to move forward with it.
At the time, we stayed with our previous PM system, which eventually became outdated and was not useful. It made complete sense to move forward with Modernizing Medicine’s PM system because it seamlessly connects to EMA. We hit the ground running and completed informative virtual training sessions, which we preferred because everyone could complete the sessions on their own time. The continued support we receive has been stellar and our issues are resolved quickly.
STREAMLINE COMMUNICATIONS AND SAVE TIME
Having all-in-one ENT software has streamlined communications and saved time. The ease of tracking patient recalls and orders, and communicating between departments has made our workflow more efficient. Because it’s one seamless system, anyone can answer a call and pull up the patient note to better understand what the patient is calling about. Our providers also love the convenience of being able to access the schedule as it helps them plan their day. In addition, Patient Reminders are another great feature that saves us time because we call fewer people and patients really like it. We can search for unconfirmed appointments and follow up with those patients—it takes the guesswork out.
The administrative reports we utilize within the PM system are so much easier and more detailed than our previous system. We’ve gained a higher transparency into our financials and now close at the end of the month versus daily, which required a lot of work previously. Also, our front desk can post payments now because it’s such an easy part of the checkout process and a time saver. There is no longer duplication of work and billing is so much easier—hands down, everything is more efficient.

Modernizing Medicine is always up to date on what’s going on in the industry and offers informative, thought-leadership webinars. Technology is moving faster than most people can keep up with, so every bit of help we can get is a bonus. When the E/M coding changes took effect, I can’t imagine what that transition would have been like without the support and preparedness of Modernizing Medicine. We have a constant resource in EMA to help us understand why certain automated codes were suggested, so we can make adjustments if needed.
