Largest gastroenterology group in the Mid-Atlantic states saved $320,000 by deploying cloud-based, gastro-specific EHR software
Boca Raton, Fla. – February 27, 2018 – gMed®, a Modernizing Medicine® company and developer of the award-winning gGastro® Suite, announced today that Capital Digestive Care has implemented gGastro Cloud, the cloud-based version of gMed’s gastroenterology-specific electronic health record (EHR) system. gGastro Cloud provides Capital Digestive Care with a single source for managing clinical, financial and operational data – enabling increased profitability, significant cost savings, reduced downtime and a scalable cloud strategy.
Capital Digestive Care is the largest gastroenterology group in the Mid-Atlantic states, diagnosing and treating a wide range of digestive and liver conditions. With 60 physicians, 300 employees and 28 practice locations across the Washington metropolitan area, Capital Digestive Care had a complicated technical environment that consisted of outdated servers and disparate hardware and software solutions. Its physicians often spent valuable time working to diagnose and address system issues and glitches. Realizing the aging infrastructure would not support scalable growth in the future, the group decided to move to cloud-based technology and partner with a single vendor that could provide the technical support for both the hardware, system software and application in one place.
“We worked closely with gMed’s technical team throughout the entire project and I was impressed by the number of dedicated experts they provided us to ensure we had a smooth transition,” said David Smith, chief information and security officer at Capital Digestive Care, who led the transition effort. “We took gGastro offline at five o’clock on a Friday, and by five o’clock on Saturday we were back up and running in the cloud. We were only down for a total of 24 hours and our business operations were not impacted at all.”
Since implementing gGastro Cloud, Capital Digestive Care continues to experience the benefits the GI-specific system offers, including enhanced reliability, efficient data sharing between locations and simple backend management. By teaming up with a trusted and established vendor in the gastroenterology industry, the practice has saved over $200,000 in hardware and software upgrade enhancements and over $120,000 in ongoing annual savings.
The group has also experienced reduced downtime since the installation. With gGastro Cloud, everything is in the hands of the technical experts at gMed and issues are constantly monitored and quickly resolved. This has saved time for Capital Digestive Care’s senior network engineer, enabling the employee to focus on business intelligence and operational excellence.
Capital Digestive Care’s physicians can access the gGastro Cloud application from virtually anywhere with an internet connection without needing to reroute through a VPN tunnel or remote desktop solution. They can easily input important patient data in or out of the exam room, which helps to streamline workflow, prevent burnout and ease increased reporting demands under quality-based care.
Dr. Michael Weinstein, a physician and president and CEO of Capital Digestive Care, shared, “As president, I value saving money and improving operations, but as a physician I need to care for my patients. Since switching to gGastro Cloud, we noticed significant improvements in consistency and speed. I also like having the reassurance that if a problem does arise, it’s going to be fixed within a few minutes, not a few hours. Most physicians just want to concentrate on their patients and they don’t really know what goes on behind the scenes during a project like this. Thanks to gMed and the commitment from our team, the transition was seamless and we’ve had higher satisfaction.”
