Modernizing Medicine Collaborates With Appriss Health to Provide Point-of-Care Access to PDMP Information
New interface with Appriss Health’s PMP Gateway provides physicians with access to state prescription drug monitoring programs, helping combat substance use disorders
BOCA RATON, Fla.— April 30, 2020—Specialty-specific healthcare information technology leader Modernizing Medicine® today announced a collaboration with Appriss Health to enable point-of-care access to state prescription drug monitoring programs (PDMPs). Physicians using Modernizing Medicine’s award-winning electronic health record (EHR) system, EMA®, will now have a link to access Appriss Health’s PMP Gateway from within the platform, helping make it easier to access multi-state PDMP data during patient encounters. Appriss Health’s PMP Gateway is live in 42 states. The new interface is particularly relevant for specialties that often prescribe pain management drugs, such as orthopedic surgeons, pain management physicians and Mohs surgeons.
“Access to prescription drug monitoring data at point-of-care is a critical component of fighting the opioid epidemic, which continues to devastate families across the U.S.,” said Steve Bethke senior vice president of product management at Modernizing Medicine. “By creating an interface between the PMP Gateway and EMA, practices can more efficiently view a patient’s history of prescriptions, including opioids.”
The opioid epidemic remains an ongoing crisis in the U.S., with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimating nearly 70,000 drug overdose deaths in 2018. This relationship between Modernizing Medicine and Appriss gives providers access to information prior to prescribing and dispensing controlled substances. In states where available, Appriss’s PDMP data is available via a one-click process from within EMA, which helps eliminate the need for physicians to manually log into multiple state PDMP databases. Providers can search the available PDMP data by patient name and demographic information, which was previously a cumbersome and time-consuming process. With easier access to PDMP information, physicians can more readily access and assess a patient’s potential risk for substance abuse.
“The ability to use a click to access PDMP information from Appriss when prescribing a new medication to a patient has been a huge time saver for us, and we appreciate how much easier it is to access this data from within EMA, rather than having to check the PDMP database outside of the EHR,” said Jonathan Kamerlink, MD, Kamerlink Pain Institute. “We can see if there are any discrepancies in the patient history, a step that is hugely important when prescribing controlled substances.”
Currently, Appriss Health’s PMP Gateway is live in 42 states and the company processes more than 92 million transactions per month with more than 130 EHR and pharmacy management system vendors.
“Integration of PDMP information into the provider workflow provides timely access to critical information that can help clinicians identify and manage patient risk,” said Ken Cassell, vice president of business development at Appriss Health. “All of us at Appriss Health are incredibly proud to partner with Modernizing Medicine in supporting the thousands of clinicians who are using this technology to improve patient care and safety.”
